Six kilometers across at its widest point, Lake Sapanca is one of Turkey’s larger stretches of inland water. It is connected to the Sea of Marmara and drained by the Sakarya river. Very beautiful from a distance, it is strating to suffer from the various new uses to which it is being put, amongst them serving as a drinking-water reservoir for Istanbul and providing water for local industrial plants. There are many hotels and restaurants beside the lake, as well as lots of villas under construction as weekend cottages.

The lake is a magnet for waterfowl and you should be able to see common and redcrested pochards as well as coots on the water.
