The seaside village of Mürefte lies in an area of rich, fertile soil which is perfect for wine-growing. The sea is glorious, the wines divine. It’s a great place to come for a long weekend break from Istanbul.

Mürefte is a small settlement, 51 km southwest of Tekirdağ. It probably dates back to around 2000 BC and according to ancient sources, the name Mürefte came from the Greek word “miryefton”, meaning “of 10.000 fragrances”, a name, which makes perfect sense if you visit in spring, when every field will be awash with wild flowers of every hue giving off most wonderful aroma.
The drive to Mürefte
The drive to Mürefte is reason enough for a visit, especially in spring. On the way it’s worth stopping off in Uçmakdere to have a drink in the teahouse in the village square. Afterwards you can take a quick look at the old wooden houses and at the venerable old plane trees which wear proud plaques identifying them as ancient monuments.
The wineries
The wines produced in this area are legendary and it is small wonder that most of the major wine producers in Turkey have vineyards in Mürefte. Several wine producers offer “degustation” sessions to let you sample their products. Some, but not all of them, charge a fee.
