The Galata Tower

This tower was built by the Genoese in 1216. It was the main tower in the walls of the Genose colony in Istanbul. Galata. The tower is 32.35 m. high, measures 16.45m. in diameter on the ground floor, and can be mounted via a staircase of 146 treads. There are seven storeys within the tower. It was restored several times during the Ottoman period, and was used for a long time as a fire-watch tower. During the reign of Mahmut II, the uppermost storey was converted into a chamber measuring 12×10m. with 14 windows, and is now used as a night-clup.
