The Mosque of Atik Ali Pasha

Sunday, April 18th, 2010 / admin

A little past the Column of Constantine, or the Burnt Column (Chemberli Tash) stands the small mosque built in 1497 by Hadin (the Eunuch) Ali Pasha, known as Atik (the Old), Grand Vizier of Sultan Bayezid II. It consists of a very simple prayer hall surmounted by a cupola and preceded by a covered portico with cupolas. The main cupola is supported in the east by a semi-cupola and flanked by two small cupolas. In the cemetery surrounding it are the tombs of eminent political figures of the 16th and 17th centuries.
From the “official” town it is easy to go up over the top of the plateau to the district of the large bazaar and the upper parts of the commercial town which can also be approached directly from Karakoy Bridge and Eminonu Square.
